How many driving lessons do you need?

The honest answer: it differs per person. You can still make a good estimate up front. What the number of lessons depends on, and how the 30 and 40-hour packages work.

How many driving lessons do you need?

It is the question almost every learner asks during the trial lesson: how many lessons will I need? The honest answer is that it differs per person. In the Netherlands the average is about 50 hours of driving lessons, but your number may be higher or lower. Below you can read what it depends on and how you can influence it yourself.

What does the number of lessons depend on?

  • Experience. If you have ridden a scooter or moped in traffic, you already recognise many situations and things often go faster.
  • How often you drive. Driving every week means less repetition than having a lesson every few weeks. ReykR aims for one lesson a week, but you set the pace.
  • The length of your lessons. Lessons usually last 60 or 90 minutes. A 90-minute lesson leaves more time to learn something new and then do it on your own a few times.
  • Nerves. Nerves cost concentration. The more relaxed you are, the faster you learn. Also read how to deal with nerves during your lessons.
  • Your theory. Your practical exam can only be booked once you have passed the theory exam. Start your theory in time, so you will not have to wait later.

An honest estimate after your trial lesson

During the trial lesson we first get to know each other calmly, and then you drive yourself. I see how you steer, look and react, and based on that you get an honest estimate of how many lessons you need. After every lesson we look together at how far you are in your course, and we adjust that estimate together along the way.

A 30 or 40-hour package?

At ReykR you choose between two packages. The 30-hour package contains 25 hours of driving, the interim test (2.5 hours) and the practical exam (2.5 hours). The 40-hour package contains 35 hours of driving plus the same test and exam. Learners without driving experience usually choose the 40-hour package.

If you have hours left at the end, you get them back. If you need a few more, you add single lessons. That way you never pay for lessons you do not need. Current prices are on the prices page.

Getting more out of every lesson

  • Plan your lessons regularly, ideally every week at a fixed time.
  • When you are a passenger, watch actively: where does the driver look at a roundabout, when do they ease off the accelerator?
  • Ask at the end of each lesson what you will practise next time, so you can already think about it.
  • Busy period with tests or exams? Feel free to skip a lesson and pick it up again afterwards, rather than sitting in the car with your mind elsewhere.

Curious how many lessons you need? Request a trial lesson and you will get an honest estimate afterwards. If you then choose a package, the trial lesson is free.
